Students at home being unable to read what is on the board.Continuously having to tilt the camera up, then down again, disrupting the lesson flow.Ensuring the webcam is set at the right angle to capture the entire screen.Rachel created a workaround solution by pointing her web camera at the board, but this brought with it its own problems: To overcome these challenges, the class of 40 used Google meet for video and audio, and while the solution worked well, it lacked the right tools for two-way content sharing. Despite the physical distance, there was also an expectation that lessons would be delivered in the same way to those in the classroom and at home. With 25% of Rachel’s 40 pupil class learning from home, there were more barriers than ever to effective instruction. The ProblemĪs hybrid learning became the norm this year, these moments of connection in the classroom became less frequent and increasingly difficult to achieve. The classroom moved online, with many educators relying on video-conferencing tools to carry out their normal teaching practices. When COVID-19 broke out across the world back in March 2020, the education sector was suddenly upended by restrictions on physical gatherings in many countries. These moments were instantaneous, Rachel would show-talk through a topic or idea, and as she was saying it, she could see if it was being understood or, more importantly, not being understood.
